The history of aquaponics is an unreliable credit to various start dates and cultures. Many attribute it to 5th century China, others to the Romans. Adding more ambiguity to the narrative are the Egyptian hieroglyphs thought to depict fish culturing. Could Egypt’s, and Africa’s, answer for the future be concealed in its past? 

“Water scarcity and food insecurity, combined with human population growth, pose serious challenges to North Africa’s agricultural sector. Egypt’s population is expected to increase from around 80 million today to around 97 million in 2025 (UN Population data), and current per capita water supply is expected to drop by 40% by 2025.”
